                        Lino lord

We speak to Mark Lord best known as ‘Lino Lord’ in the printmaking world.  He discusses how his experience in photography and how his Cornish roots have inspired and influenced his work.

Can you introduce yourself

My name is Mark Lord, I have been a professional photographer for 25 years and a printmaker for around 5 years. I have always loved ‘creating and making’ and find it impossible to be idle, so when my photography work took an unexpected pause in 2020, I picked up my lino and have never looked back. My printmaking business has flourished and sits happily alongside my ‘day job’. The two actually compliment each other very well.

Can you describe your style of lino printing?

My style is definitely influenced by my photography and looking at the world through a lens. My lino prints are quite graphic and I enjoy playing with negative shapes as well as the subject itself. I tend to work in one colour –  my own ‘Lino Lord Lugger Blue’. A rich blue/black, I feel it suits my work which is often influenced by the sea and my Cornish roots. It also sits well in people’s homes which is important.

How and when did you get started in lino printing?

I am very drawn to the analogue world, a simpler time when craft was truly ‘crafted’ by a hand and time honoured process. Increasingly over the years I have felt my photography work, while fulfilling, was ‘at the mercy of a microchip’ and I started craving a more hands on approach to creativity. A pivotal moment came when I photographed an artist in Norfolk with a fabulous light filled studio. It was such an inspiring space and when I came home, my wife and I built our own little creative space in our old spare room to ‘scratch that persistent itch’. I remember vividly sitting at my homemade scaffold board table and thinking ‘ok, now I have the space, what next?’ It was then I picked up my Essdee lino kit and the rest is history.

Why lino printing?

I’m an image maker so I understand dark and light tones, composition and filling a frame with ‘shape’. But I’ve realised of late that what I also really love is ‘process’ – whether that’s watching a basket maker skilfully harvest and weave willow to create something useful, or a woodcarver transforming a stick into a spoon, I love learning what’s involved in the crafting of something beautiful. Printmaking has a number of processes of it’s own from start to finish: from planning the image, to carving, to inking and printing –  each of the steps are very different and I enjoy them all. It’s taken time to learn them and I certainly wouldn’t say I’m a ‘master’ of any but I am getting there, slowly perfecting the printmaking process and claiming this little corner of analogue world as my own. 

Where do you work?

We are lucky to live in an ‘upside down’ house with our living room and studio upstairs. It’s not a big space but we have huge slanting windows in the eaves letting in loads of light – in fact, too much at times as the studio gets extremely hot in the summer! I sometimes carve in the studio but often pick a quiet spot somewhere around the house and I also take my lino & tools down to the allotment for inspiration while we harvest our veg. We take regular trips home to Cornwall and my lino and a slimline tool kit come with me every time in my rucksack, ready for moments of inspiration on the coast. 

Tell us about your typical day

 My days are quite varied and that’s what I love about my work. Some days I carve all day, other days I print all day, most days I do a bit of everything. When I print, it’s for a good chunk of time, at least 4 hours. I get into a rhythm and aim to produce between 20-30 prints in one go –  I feel like I’ve accomplished something then. Also, once you’ve got the studio all inky and you’re in a good flow, it’s a shame to stop and tidy up! Photography keeps me very busy in the spring and summer months but I’m always thinking of new lino ideas as well as producing and selling my work. I do several Makers markets throughout the year and often have a stall at our traditional Thame town market on a Tuesday. My online sales are ever growing so I also spend time maintaining stock levels and processing orders. I’m lucky enough to have a part time person who also helps out once a week so I can concentrate on the creative stuff.

What inspires your work?

For me, it’s always the sea. I grew up in Cornwall (near Falmouth) and I’d still call myself a Cornishman, through and through. We now live in landlocked Oxfordshire (about as far away from the coast as it’s possible to get) so in fact, my coastal prints are a chance to escape back to my home and where my heart is. Cornwall is an endless source of inspiration for me – whether it’s a raging stormy sea with gunmetal skies or a harbour with water as still as a millpond, I love it all. Inspired by the analogue approach to life, I also enjoy creating images of iconic household items such as old transistor radios, coffee pots and vintage cameras. There’s something immensely pleasing about celebrating the beauty of every day, functional objects that hark back to a time gone by but still ‘stand the test of time’ as simple design icons in their own right.

I feel very privileged to be stocked in a number of independent art and gift shops all over the country – ‘from Lands End to John O’Groats’ so to speak! There’s a full list of stockists on my website where you can also order prints directly with me. And of course, social media is a great place to get to know Mark ‘Lino’ Lord’ and my work – instagram has been a great additional tool for me over the years and I have wonderful followers who are always keen to see the next reel or work in progress. 

Do you have a favourite print?

I have lots of prints that I love and that mean something to me. I think that my most recent print is perhaps (currently!) my favourite because it represents a ‘sea-change’ (pardon the pun….) for me in both style and the size of carving. It’s a harbour scene from my beloved Porthscatho and my biggest print to date at four times the size of my regular work. I have also built up the confidence to take a more graphic approach to the composition and played with the perspective of the horizon and the harbour itself. It was a heartstopping moment when I pulled it through the press for the first time but to my relief and delight, it printed beautifully and I feel it truly represents me as an artist at this stage in my printmaking journey.

Do you have any advice for other lino printmakers?

I’d always say invest in the best kit you can, always warm your lino and always cut away from yourself! A new technique I’ve recently taken up is sanding my lino with ‘wet and dry’ paper to smooth off any little surface imperfections, that’s been a bit of a revelation and I do notice the difference. Oh, also, keep your tools sharp, that’s a must.

I have all my prints, mugs and tea towels listed on my shop  and all my latest news is over on instagram where I am @linolordpress. I’m a regular poster on instagram and have plenty of fun reels showing my work and behind the scenes process. 

How can we attend one of your workshops?

I absolutely love holding workshops and meeting enthusiastic printmakers keen to ‘hone’ their skills. I host regular workshops in the South Oxfordshire area and in Thame (my local market town). I’ll also be popping up at the beautiful Daylesford organic this year and taking a trip MUCH further north in September when I spend a fortnight teaching liino-printing at Holmen Lofoten in the Arctic Circle in Norway! Rather a dream job, for both a printmaker and a photographer, going there will be a bit of a ‘pinch me’ moment and one I’m incredibly excited about.

Transferring data outside of the EEA We do not currently transfer your data outside of the EEA, except in the case of our use of a marketing automation platform (currently Mailchimp) which we use to transmit emails on our behalf.  As part of our commitment to protecting your data we strive at all times to ensure that full and GDPR-compliant arrangements between Educational Arts and Craft Supplies Ltd and our chosen automation platform provider are in place. Data Security We strive to maintain appropriate security measures to prevent your personal data from being accidentally lost, used or accessed in an unauthorised way, altered or disclosed. In addition, we limit access to your personal data to those employees, agents, contractors and other third parties who have a business need to know. They will only process your personal data on our instructions and they are subject to a duty of confidentiality. Ways in which data is protected include having in place a Data Protection Policy, adhering to Data Retention Protocols, restricting access to data to only those staff who need to access it as part of their duties, using password protection, applying firewall protection and encryption technology, using disposing of paper documents containing personal data by shredding, using lockable filing cabinets and training staff in the importance of data security. We have put in place procedures to deal with any suspected personal data breach and will notify you and the ICO of a breach where we are legally required to do so. Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure.  Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of your data transmitted to our website; any transmission is at your own risk.  Once we have received your information, we will use strict procedures and security features to try to prevent unauthorised access. Data Retention We will only retain your personal data for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for, including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting, or reporting requirements. In some circumstances you can ask us to delete your data.  This is explained in the section about your legal rights below. In some circumstances we may anonymise your personal data (so that it can no longer be associated with you) for research or statistical purposes.  In this case we may use this information indefinitely without further notice to you. Your Legal Rights Under certain circumstances, you have rights under data protection laws in relation to your personal data.  If you wish to exercise any of the rights set out below you should contact us. You will not have to pay a fee to access your personal data (or to exercise any of the other rights). However, we may charge a reasonable fee if your request is clearly unfounded, repetitive or excessive. Alternatively, we may refuse to comply with your request in these circumstances. We may need to request specific information from you to help us to confirm your identity and to ensure your right to access your personal data (or to exercise any of your other rights).
